A Brief History of Infant Jesus Shrine, Dabra

A small beautiful Shrine on the hillock situated on the National Highway 44 is visible for all who travel on the this way. The Late Bishop Most Rev. Dr. Frederick D’Souza, then bishop of Jhansi, had a desire to start a Mission Station in Dabra.   Rev. Fr. Frederick Mendonca  purchased the present plot of land in 1993. The land was uneven and consisted a hillock and ditches. Rev. Fr.  Lawrence who succeeded Rev. Fr. Frederick Mendonca, had an enormous task of clearing the hillock in order to make use of the land for the school purpose.   As he was breaking the hillock with the help of a local man, Mr. Kulendra Singh Chauhan, big and small stones of different shapes came out of the hill. On seeing the beautiful stones Mr. Chauhan suggested Rev.Fr. Lawrence to build a grotto like that of Mount Mary Church, Bandra. He liked the suggestion from the non Christian friend and built a beautiful grotto. As he was pondering about installing a statue of Our Lady and discussed with some of his friends, Mrs. Tresa Rosalind Jacob proposed to Rev. Fr. Lawrence to install the statue of Infant Jesus as there were no pilgrim centres in this part of Centre India.  Thus it was decided to dedicate the newly built grotto to Infant Jesus. Usually grottos are constructed in honour of Our Lady after the model of Lourdes. Mrs. Tresa and family members used to visit Infant Jesus Shrine, Nasik. Once as they went to pray in the shrine of Infant Jesus, Nasik, her daughter, Yvonne Anthony, who had an eczema  in the sole of her foot, was miraculously healed on the spot. This miracle deepened the faith of Mrs. Tresa Jacob. It was the reason that motivated her to suggest Rev.Fr. Lawrence to dedicate the Grotto to Infant Jesus. She also bore the expenses of the statue and the Bhandara (Agape). Infant Jesus grotto  was blessed on 10th February  2002  by Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Kaithathara, Bishop of Gwalior. About two hundred persons including Mr. Chauhan, Mrs. Tresa Jacob and her family members were present on this occasion. In the following year, Mr. Chauhan reminded Rev. Fr. Lawrence about the celebration of the Feast of Infant Jesus and the Agape. Mr. Chauhan also offered to meet the expenses. Thus the feast became an annual celebration. The devotion to Infant Jesus gradually grew and people began to come and pray at the Grotto. Their prayers were answered and the faith increased. More and more people began to flock to this place. Every year people from different Parishes and Mission Stations of Gwalior diocese and even from neighbouring dioceses began to come for the Feast. The number of devotees grew year after year. Meanwhile Rev. Fr. Lawrence was transferred. Rev. Fr. Biju Chitteth, Rev. John Xavier, Rev. Fr. Joseph Chipson, Rev.Fr. Alphonse and Rev. Fr. Eugene Rosario also continued to promote the devotion to Infant  Jesus. Rev. Fr. Lawrence  became the Priest in-charge for the second term from 7th June 2010 to 28th  January 2015. He was succeeded by Rev. Fr. Dr. Joseph Chakkalakkal and  assumed  the charge of St. Peter Mission  on 29th January 2015.  A  Shrine of Infant Jesus was built on the hillock and was blessed on 29th January 2016 by Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Kaithathara.  ‘The Stations of the Cross’ on the hillock was blessed by Most Rev. Dr. Thomas Thennatt SAC on 12th February 2017. A Grotto of Our Lady at entrance of the foothill was blessed on 15th August 2017 by Most Rev. Dr. Joseph Thykkattil.   An imposing Gate, ‘Infant Jesus portal’ was blessed by Most Rev. Lawrence D'Souza, Vicar General, Gwalior Diocese, Rev.Fr. Dilip Nanda, the Rector of Infant Shrine, priests, Sisters and a large number of devotees. Most Rev. Dr. Leopoldo Girelli also laid the foundation stone for a new church on the same day. Rev.
